NEW FNM Structure for June – Block Constructed! Pizza! More Packs!

Our ALL-NEW, improved Friday Night Magic! Starting June 3, we’re going to do two flights of FNM – Scars of Mirrodin Block Constructed starting at 7 p.m., our usual Standard at 10 p.m – except prize will now be a BOX! It’s pretty long, so I’ve just put all the new details below the cut. In short, pizza, FNM store credit side pot, and more booster prizes!

For the 7 p.m. event, here’s the details:

* Sanctioned FNM Block Constructed. All usual Constructed rules are in effect (60 cards in the main deck, 15 in the sideboard), except decks must only contain cards from Scars… of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia.

* There is an entry fee – $5 – BUT, for this $5, you’ll get two slices of Papa John’s pizza (sausage, pepperoni and cheese available) as well as a complimentary booster pack for every round you win over three rounds of play. So, you could end up with three boosters and two slices of pizza for $5! Good deal, right?

* June FNM cards – Rhox War Monk – will be distributed, two to the top two players by standings and two randomly distributed FNM cards among all entrants.

* If you’re interested in learning what decks are currently popular in Block Constructed, the decks that do well in Magic Online Block events are listed here: http://www.wizards.com/magic/Digital/MagicOnline.aspx?x=mtg%2Fdigital%2Fmagiconline%2Fwhatshappening

While these decklists don’t include New Phyrexia, they’re an excellent place to start for deckbuilding!

Here’s the deal with the 10 p.m. Standard event:

* Sanctioned FNM Standard tournament. All usual Constructed rules are in effect (60 cards in the main deck, 15 in the sideboard), except decks must only contain cards from Zendikar, Worldwake, Rise of the Eldrazi, Magic 2011, Scars of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Besieged, and New Phyrexia.

* There is also a $5 entry fee… HOWEVER, if you played in the 7 p.m. FNM, you don’t have to pay! You freeroll right in!

* Prize support will be 36 boosters, split evenly (nine packs) among the top 4 players by standings after four rounds of play. NOTE THIS, THIS IS IMPORTANT: If a player in the top four has a draw, prize support to that player will be cut by three packs, and that support will go to the next-highest player outside of top four. Because of the necessity of trimming the tournament to four rounds, this is intended to reduce intentional drawing to monopolize the top four after only three rounds of play.

* June FNM cards – Rhox War Monk – will be distributed, two to the top two players by standings and two randomly distributed FNM cards among all entrants.

* FNM Side Pot! By popular demand, we’re bringing back play for store credit. Here’s how this works:
– If at least four players pay an additional $5, those players are placed in an additional ‘side pot’ for store credit. For every $5, we’ll add $6 to the store credit pool.
– At the end of the tournament, the top 25 percent of players by standings, rounded up, will receive store credit prize from the pool. First place will receive a maximum of $25 in store credit before the ‘bonus’, second place will receive a maximum of $15, and remaining places receive a maximum of $10 on a ‘waterfall’ basis from the pool. Any remaining store credit after the places will go as a bonus to first place.
– For example, if there are four people, the top person by standings will receive $24 in store credit. If there are five, the top will receive $25, second will receive $5. If there are eight ($48), first place will receive $25, second place will receive $15, and then first place will receive $8 more as a bonus. If there are nine ($54), first place receives $25, second place receives $15, third place receives $10. The remaining $4 goes to first place!
– I know that’s really non-intuitive and weird, but once we do it a couple of times, I promise it will make sense. Pinkie swear.
